Have you thought about COLON CANCER lately? Well, maybe you should! According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the United States, affecting both men and women. Even though colon cancer is on the decline overall, it is on the rise in individuals under 50. In addition to that, individuals under the age of 50 diagnosed with colon cancer are among those hit the hardest financially. Sadly, according to the American Cancer Society, “it’s one cancer that can actually be prevented!”
So, what would you do if you knew someone under the age of 50 diagnosed with colon cancer? The friends and family of Scott Walden were faced with that same question just a few years ago when, at the age of 38, Scott was diagnosed with Stage IV Colon Cancer. Well, Shane and Maggie Pritchard decided to take action; and with the help of Scott’s family and friends, Augusta’s 1st Annual Shine For Scott Benefit Concert was held in June 2010. It was a huge success! Even though Scott passed away just a few weeks before the concert was held, those very same family and friends decided to turn that first concert into a nonprofit organization in order to help others like Scott. By the end of 2010, Shine For Scott, Inc., was born.
Augusta’s 3rd Annual Shine For Scott Benefit Concert:
Augusta’s 3rd Annual Shine For Scott Benefit Concert is going to be fun for the whole family, with live music and great food! Some of Augusta’s best local musicians will take the stage, starting at 2pm. Then, the night will close out with Dana Andrews and George Croft and The Vellotones. That’s right! Dana Andrews, from Rock Star SuperNova, is coming home! She will be SHINING with Georgia Music Hall of Fame inductee George Croft and some of Augusta’s favorite rockers, The Vellotones! The Soul City Sirens will also stop by to volunteer their time for this great cause.
The benefit will be held on Saturday, June 9th, at Laura’s Backyard Tavern at 218 South Belair Road in Martinez. Doors open at 1pm. Music starts at 2pm and will go until 10pm. Tickets are $10 at the door; children 12 and under are free.
Confirmed bands include:
*George Croft and The Vellotones
All proceeds go to benefit Shine For Scott’s programs, which include supporting individuals in the Augusta and Savannah areas affected by colon cancer, educating the public, providing life saving screenings, and funding clinicians and scientists advancing colon cancer research. In fact, part of the proceeds from this concert will help four scientists and/or clinicians in 2013 doing research on the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and/or cure of colon cancer. Your support in spreading the word about this worthy cause is very much appreciated! I look forward to seeing you SHINE!
